SNOW SQUALL WARNINGS TODAY

Weather conditions are affecting area roadways with a snow squall warning this morning for southern Lycoming County, and areas of Clinton and Northumberland and Union Counties .  The National Weather Service says intense bursts of heavy snow with gusty winds up to 35 miles per hour have been reported which can take a driver’s visibility to less than a quarter mile.  At this time, both lanes of Interstate 80 westbound were closed between Northumberland and Clinton counties overnight due to a multi vehicle crash in Clinton County near mile marker 189 in Green Township. A winter weather advisory was issued today for northern Clinton County until 1 p.m. Friday.

DANVILLE HUNTER FOUND DECEASED

A 59 year old man from Danville was found deceased near Cameltown Road in Valley Township after he failed to return from hunting Monday evening.  According to Milton State police, Paul Hutchison, Jr. had gotten a deer earlier in the day and suffered a medical emergency and collapsed as he was getting ready to pull the deer from the woods. The Montour County Coroner’s Office was on the scene after 8pm and pronounced Hutchinson dead at 8:40pm.  Valley Township Fire Department, Montour County Sheriff’s Office, Montour County Drone Team also responded to the incident.

WILLIAMSPORT AREA SCHOOL BOARD MEETING

The Williamsport Area School Board met recently and made some routine changes to personnel and policy, approving the district’s health and safety plan with one change. According to the Sun Gazette, administrators determined that a physician, or other health professional must write prescription for the student to wear a mask in school.  This move was so that students cannot attempt to hide their identity during the school day by wearing a facemask.  In other school board business, the current board conducted their annual reorganizational meeting this week and chose current president and vice president, Lori Baer and Jamie Sanders to continue in their same positions. The next board meeting is January 14th.

WELLSBORO STUDENT CHOSEN AS BASSMASTER

A high school student from Wellsboro has been chosen to represent Pennsylvania for the Bassmaster High School All-State fishing team.  According to the Sun Gazette, Colegan Stiner was one of 45 students picked from across the nation.  Twelve top Bassmaster All Americans will be selected from the 45 by a panel of judges to compete in the 2025 Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Classic in Fort Worth, Texas, starting March 21st.   Stiner is a senior at Wellsboro. He and his fishing partner Connor Kapp clinched the PA BASS Nation State Championship two years in a row in 2022 and 2023.

TRUCKS SHOULD AVOID ROUTE 54 TODAY

With weather conditions this morning slowing the interstates, PennDOT is advising that commercial trucks and large trucks avoid Route 54 between Route 487 in Ralpho Township and Route 61 in Mount Carmel Township in Northumberland County. Commercial trucks and large trucks should use Route 61 and Route 487 instead. Crews will continue to treat roadways throughout the storm until precipitation stops and roads are clear. Penn DOT has put Tier 2 restrictions in place on I-80, with speed limits dropped to 45 miles per hour heading to the Ohio State line. Commercial vehicles not affected by the restrictions must move to the right lane.

VICTIM IDENTIFIED IN KULPMONT CRASH

A woman from Kulpmont was the victim in the one-car accident along Brennan’s Farm Road, just south of Veterans Memorial Park in Mount Carmel Township on Monday night.  According to the News Item, Northumberland County Coroner James Kelley said 79-year-old Christine Covaleski died in the crash.  Crews came up on Covaleski’s vehicle on the embankment around 9pm Monday and found her in cardiac arrest.  First responders efforts to revive the victim were unsuccessful.  An autopsy is planned to determine the exact cause of death. 

NEW MILITARY LICENSE PLATES AVAILABLE TO HONOR VETERANS

A new selection of military-themed license plates are available in Pennsylvania and were announced recently by the Shapiro Administration.  According to PennDOT, six new license plates honoring military veterans are available to show our appreciation for the sacrifices of our military members and their families have made. Three plates are for service members who received medals or honors for individual achievements or deployments and three other new plate designs recognize women veterans.  Find out more about eligibility requirements and to see images of the license plates go to pa.gov.
